The hall of fame’s 2025 class includes honorees from across the Madison County area, including three players from Butler High School’s basketball program: Courtney Beasley, Bobby Lee Hurt, and Tasheika Morris.
All of the inductees will be enshrined at a banquet on Monday, April 14, at the Von Braun Center. Tickets and advertising information can be found at www.hmcahof.com.
“It’s an honor,” Beasley said. “I’m from Butler, I didn’t know I was one of a few from Butler that was in the hall of fame, like Bobby Lee Hurt. It’s a real honor to be a Hall of Fame next to Bobby Lee Hurt, which he played on the NBA and everything.”
Other inductees include longtime Sparkman coach Dale Palmer, longtime Alabama AM bowling coach Jeff McCorvey and former Lee-Huntsville football standout Dwight Scales.
“It’s a great honor,” Palmer said. “When I got the phone call, I was really shocked, because since I’ve retired, I’ve been working in another business, and I hadn’t really had time to think about anything. All of a sudden, it’s an emotional moment, because it is a big honor and a tribute to all the kids who played for me and helped us achieve the success we had.”
The 12 inductees include:
-- Courtney Beasley: Was an all-state guard at Butler High School, who went on to play at Southern Miss before a professional career overseas.
--Bobby Lee Hurt: Another former Butler High School basketball standout who was a three-year starter at the University of Alabama.
-- Tasheika Morris: Along with earning Miss Basketball honors in 1999, Morris was a four-time All-State selection and three-time state champion with Butler High School; she signed with Tennessee out of high school.
-- Israel Raybon: The Huntsville native is regarded as one of the best football players in University of North Alabama history, being inducted into the program’s hall of fame. He was a two-time All-American on the defensive line and went on to play in the NFL with the Steelers and Panthers.
-- Dwight Scales: A Lee High graduate, Scales played at the collegiate level with Grambling State before an eight-year career in the NFL. He is a member of Grambling State’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
-- Jayson Swain: He was an all-American receiver at Grissom High School before a collegiate career at the University of Tennessee, where he was a team captain as a senior.
-- Tom Pruett: After a playing career at Huntsville High and Alabama A&M, he served on Huntsville’s soccer coaching staff for over 20 years.
-- Dale Palmer: One of the most successful softball coaches in Alabama high school history, Palmer collected over 1,000 wins and six state championships leading the program at Sparkman High School.

Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, has now spread to an Alabama college campus after over a month of reported outbreaks in K-12 schools.
On Monday, the University of Alabama at Huntsville (UAH) released a statement saying that “a limited number of cases” had been identified.
“We are taking precautions to prevent future infections,” the release reads.
“If you have been seen by a medical provider and Pertussis was suspected, please stay at home for the first 5 days of the appropriate antibiotic treatment or until test results are known. The most accurate test for diagnosing pertussis is a swab placed through the nose called a nasopharyngeal swab.”
“Appropriate antibiotics given early may minimize severe symptoms and prevent further spread of the disease. Please observe yourself for the above symptoms for the next 3 weeks. Adults, teens, and vaccinated children often have milder symptoms that may be confused with bronchitis or asthma.”
Two more cases were reported at Hewitt-Trussville High School within the last week, according to a report from WBRC.
And one parent in a Facebook post said she had received a letter from Springville High School letting her know about an outbreak earlier this week.
Representatives for both high schools did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
According to a report published on the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners website from the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH), whooping cough cases in Alabama had increased 300% from 41 cases in 2023 to 123 cases in 2024 as of October 17.
The disease is caused by bacteria infecting the mouth, nose and throat and is spread through the air by coughing.
Symptoms can appear 5 to 21 days after infection and can usually be treated by a five-day antibiotic course, according to the ADPH.
The ADPH, the CDC, and Alabama schools are also strongly recommending that parents look into the new whooping cough booster “Tdap,” for children 11 years and older.
In Alabama, the “Dtap” Pertussis vaccine is given until 7 years of age and vaccine protection begins to fade in older children.
The booster helps increase protection for adolescent students, who public health officials say are getting hit the hardest this year.

Venardos Circus - A Broadway-style, animal-free circus, will perform at MidCity District from November 14-24. Created by former Ringling Bros. Ringmaster Kevin Venardos, the circus features aerialists, acrobats, jugglers, and more, with tickets starting at $16.95 for children and $27.95 for adults.

Galaxy of Lights - Huntsville Botanical Garden will be hosting special events for all to enjoy from Nov. 15 to Dec. 31, 2024. U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Ala., said this week that President-elect Donald Trump is expected to move U.S. Space Command headquarters from Colorado Springs to Huntsville as one of his first moves in office.
Trump supported the Air Force’s decision to move the headquarters from Colorado Springs, its interim location, to Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, near the end of his first term in 2021.
But President Joe Biden in 2023 reversed that decision, deciding to retain the headquarters at Colorado.
“I told everybody then, that Colorado Springs will not be the future location of Space Command,” Rogers said Monday on Mobile radio FM Talk 106.5.
“It will be Huntsville, Alabama who won it fair and square. And President Trump said in the campaign that he was going to reverse that decision if elected.
“And I knew he would because if you remember, not only did Alabama win two nationwide competitions, but President Trump’s secretary of the Air Force recommended Huntsville, President Biden’s secretary of the Air Force recommended Huntsville, and then Biden took it away for political reasons.”
Rogers said he is confident that Trump will sign an executive order reversing Biden’s decision in his first week in office.
“And we will start construction next year in Huntsville,” he said.
Alabama Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth said there is optimism that Space Command will be relocated to the state.
“Get ready North Alabama. Just got off the phone with @SenTuberville team, and they are confident @realDonaldTrump will bring Space Command back to its rightful home in Alabama,” the lieutenant governor tweeted.
Earlier this week, U.S. Rep.-elect Jeff Crank, R-Colo., promised to “resist any attempt” to move Space Command headquarters from Colorado Springs to Huntsville following Trump’s election.
“Obviously, I believe that if it’s down to military value, (then) Colorado is the place for it to be,” Crank said in a report by The Denver Post.
Rogers has been mentioned as possibly being on a short list of candidates considered by Trump to serve as secretary of defense.
