Revel Surf Park in Mesa opens Dec. 16 and will be a popular entertainment option in the East Valley.
MESA, Ariz. — For 50 years, Arizona had Big Surf in Tempe where people could surf in the desert. The popular summer destination closed in 2019, leaving residents high and dry.
Enter Revel Surf Park at Cannon Beach in Mesa.
“I've thought often that Arizona would be the perfect state if we just had waves,” the Owner of Revel Surf Park at Cannon Beach, Cole Cannon said.
Before Monday, the closest place to surf to central Arizona was about 200 miles away. Not anymore as the surf park opens at 3:00 p.m. on Dec. 16. This is a $45 million, 4.5-acre facility with four cliff jumping platforms ranging from six to 26 feet, restaurants, a skate park, an infinity wave pool, and the centerpiece of this tropical paradise being the two-acre surf lagoon that has three million gallons of water.
“A lot of gratitude. It's been a long hot journey building out here,” Cannon said. “Since we broke ground 1,344 days ago we are officially open to the public and we’re very excited about that.”
The entire development has been a long process in the making, but employees said it was all worth it.
“We went from plastering the bottom of the pool to the whole thing coming together and now we get to surf so it’s pretty sick,” Revel Surf Park employee Rachael Washburn said.
The park uses its own patented wave technology. Cannon said only five other companies in the world have something similar. It generates different kinds of waves for all levels of surfers.
“My business partner Matt is heavily responsible for a lot of that,” Cannon added. “It's a crew of about four of us who built it. We've been building the airplane while we've been flying at the same time, and we think we built something special.”
The technology runs on hydropower. Cole said the land they’re on used to be an alfalfa farm and the surf park consumes only about two percent of what the farm used.
“We consume about the same amount of water as one hole of a golf course. Our power is that of maybe two Corvettes for our entire wave machine,” he said.
And there’s plenty to do if you don’t want to surf. There are turf, cabanas with heaters and television sets, hot tubs, a beach grill that’s open to the public and more. This all took over four years to open.
“It turned out better than we hoped,” Cannon said. “We started thinking of the extreme nature of the people who would come here. Everything just got a little bigger and better. That was part of the reason for the delay. We just kept adding more amenities to it because we want our beachgoers to have a great experience.”
Revel Surf Park has 500 membership slots, but 300 were sold before they opened.
The surf park is a part of Cannon Beach which is still a work in progress.
Cannon Beach will have some restaurants that will open in the next two to three months. In 2025, it’ll add a movie theater and electric go-cart track next door. Then 60,000 more feet of restaurants and two hotels will be built in the next three years.

MESA, AZ (AZFamily) — A busy freeway was shut down for about six hours due to a deadly pedestrian crash in the East Valley amid rush hour traffic on Monday morning.
According to Department of Public Safety troopers, at least one vehicle initially struck a person, who was later identified as 63-year-old Bryan Horner of Mesa, on the Loop 202 Red Mountain, east of Dobson Road, around 6:15 a.m. Other vehicles then ran over Horner.
DPS Spokesperson Raul Garcia says it appears that a driver may have pulled over and gotten out of the vehicle before being hit by a passing car.
“For whatever reason, [the driver] was outside or partially outside of their vehicle, whether they had an issue with the vehicle or not or or something else, is what we’re working to determine,” Garcia said.
He warns drivers to be cautious if they step outside their vehicles on a busy freeway.
“Please don’t draw any comfort with standing around or looking around at what’s going on. We understand that initial shock of being involved in an incident or checking on your vehicle, but we do ask the public to to be wary of traffic in all directions, due to wrong ways or just people not being able to see in the area,” he explained. “It’s hard to tell when someone is in or out of their car at that point. Limited light, dark hours are more difficult.”
Garcia says drivers should get to higher ground immediately in an emergency.
“Generally, we do want folks to find a safe spot. Call 911 if you’re on the highway to let us know that you’re on the side of the road,” he said. “Get away from the vehicle, get to higher ground, put some concrete between you and traffic.”
Freeway cameras showed at least two vehicles parked on the shoulder of the freeway.
The westbound lanes were shut down at Country Club Drive, while westbound Alma School Road and McKellips Road on-ramps were also closed during the investigation. The freeway reopened shortly before 12:30 p.m.

The groundbreaking event was notably commemorated by Mesa District 6 Councilmember Scott Somers, executives from VIVO Development Partners, Corey Mitchell, Senior Director of Development for Hilton, and other key members of the development, design and construction team. Together, they celebrated the launch of a project set to redefine the hospitality experience in the Southeast Valley.

The Tempo by Hilton contemporary lifestyle brand makes its Phoenix-metro debut as part of this dual-branded hotel, which will include a total of 174 rooms spread across four stories. Tempo by Hilton is designed for the modern traveler, offering 97 upscale lifestyle rooms with amenities including a resort-style pool with cabanas, an event lawn, private event spaces and indoor and outdoor fitness areas. Homewood Suites by Hilton will feature 77 extended-stay suites tailored for both business and leisure guests. Guests of the hotel and area residents also will enjoy dining at an independently branded, full-service restaurant and bar offering an elevated casual dining experience with a New American menu.
The dual-branded Hilton hotel is a key component of Gallery Park, a +1-million-square-foot mixed-use walkable village that will feature Class ‘A’ office space, high-end retail and restaurants, 305 luxury apartments, and a planned food hall and co-working venue overlooking The Park, an outdoor, family-friendly community gathering space. Completed and open for business tenants include Eggstasy, In-N-Out Burger, MOD Pizza, Panera Bread, Black Rifle Coffee, Raising Canes, Mountain America Credit Union and Spencer’s TV & Appliance, with additional announcements coming soon.

Fairmont Scottsdale Princess: Christmas at the Princess
Christmas at the Princess, the annual holiday spectacular at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess resort, is returning for its 15th year and to celebrate there will be a new light and music show along with the traditional ice skating, appearance from Santa and s'mores.

Desert Farm Lights
Desert Farm Lights has over 1 million lights along with new family-friendly activities like ice skating and Christmas ornament workshops. Returning favorite activities include a scented candy cane maze, train and wagon rides and a 90-foot gingerbread slide.

Glendale Glitters
One of metro Phoenix's favorite holiday traditions is back for 2024 and celebrating 31 years with a twinkling light display that you won't want to miss. Throughout the run of Glendale Glitters, guests can also enjoy special events like live music, ice skating and meet and greets with Santa.

Las Noches de las Luminarias
The Desert Botanical Garden's annual Las Noches de las Luminarias allows guests to experience a magical desert wonderland with nature, light and music that collide to create an enchanting evening for the entire family.

Mesa Temple Lights
The Mesa Arizona Temple, the oldest of six Arizona temples of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will bring back its Christmas lights display at the church's north lawn and temple gardens starting Friday, Nov. 29.

World of Illumination in Glendale and Tempe
If you're looking for an easy way to pack up the family and look at Christmas lights, World of Illumination has you covered at two locations. The self-proclaimed world's largest drive-thru animated light show is open in Tempe and Glendale. Each location has a mile-long light display with 500 installations based on different themes.

ZooLights at the Phoenix Zoo
ZooLights returns for another holiday season at the Phoenix Zoo and guests will once again be able to enjoy the nightly transformation to a wonderland of twinkle lights and animal sculptures. Guests will also see the return of the sky bridge, enjoy a s'more or more and possibly even catch a lion cub out past their bedtime.
