BNSF is proud to have been part of Arizona’s history for over a century. From our early days running a rail line to the Grand Canyon to operating the Southern Transcon — one of the busiest freight corridors in the U.S. today — we’ve played a key role in Arizona’s transportation network.
With significant population and economic growth continuing in the Phoenix metro area, one of the most efficient and sustainable ways to transport goods and materials is to rely on rail. Rail is the most effective means of surface transportation. Every train takes 100 or more trucks off the roads.
Logistics Park Phoenix is a $3.2 billion state-of-the-art master-planned project that will bring immediate and long-term economic benefits to the region, including:
• 26,000-plus jobs created during construction • $1.4 billion in labor income during construction • 50,000-plus jobs supported annually once completed • $2.5 billion in annual labor income • $245 million in annual state and local tax revenue for schools, emergency services and other community needs
We are working with ADOT, MCDOT and the city of Surprise to ensure local and regional transportation and traffic concerns are evaluated in the traffic impact analysis. A church congregation in southern Arizona, however, has managed to utilize the sun’s blessings in a unique way for them.
Desert Garden United Church of Christ partnered with RE-volv to bring in 114 solar panels for a 47-kW on-site project. The distributed energy resource can help the church save about $14,000 annually on electric bills and avoid the carbon emissions equivalent of 300 cars on the road.
“Our decision to go solar represents our commitment to preserving and protecting God’s beautiful creation through being good stewards of our environment and community," said Pastor Bill Utke of Desert Garden UCC in a statement. "We’re honored to serve as an example for Arizona congregations and nonprofits, showcasing the benefits of solar energy and the ease of transitioning with zero-down financing options, like RE-volv’s, and federal solar tax incentives.”
The yearly energy bill savings will help the church contribute more to the community. Desert Garden UCC contributes about $25,00 annually toward community good, including initiatives supporting at-risk youth and helping homeless seniors find housing.

The event inaugurating Desert Garden UCC’s solar array included Capital Energy, which installed the project, and RE-volv, which provided financing. Also attending were Solar United Neighbors, Arizona Alliance for Retired Americans and Arizona Interfaith Power & Light.

Sun City and Sun City West hosted the annual South Central Division Open Feb. 15-20. The SCD is one of seven divisions of Bowls USA, the governing body for the sport of bowls nationally. Aside from the US Open, the SCD Open is the largest lawn bowling tournament in the United States, attracting top bowlers from across the U.S. and Canada.
This year the women’s events were held in Sun City, at the Bell, Lakeview and Oakmont lawn bowls clubs. Their competition consisted of singles, pairs and fours.
The men competed in singles, pairs and triples events at the Johnson Lawn Bowls Club in Sun City West.
The lawn bowling greens in Sun City and Sun City West are maintained by the groundskeeping teams of the Recreation Centers of Sun City and Recreation Centers of Sun City West.
The tournament directors were Claire Day for women’s events in Sun City and Al Goff for all the men’s events in Sun City West. Day and Goff organized and managed a large team of bowling volunteers who gave up their spare time to perform daily set up, clean up, hospitality, marking for the singles games and other duties, without which the tournament would not be possible.
This year’s SCD Open was again sponsored by The Nixon Group, who for more than seven years have been supporters of lawn bowling in the Sun Cities. They again printed and sponsored all of the scorecards, and for the first time provided gold, silver and bronze medals for each event winner.
The SCD Open involved six days of competition, starting at 8:30 a.m. and some days going to 5:30 p.m. or later. Close to 200 women and men took part in the various events, many staying at local hotels or short term rental homes.
There were five multi-medal winners at this year’s SCD Open: Heather Hanoski went home with two gold and one bronze; Jordan Kos won two gold; Charlie Herbert captured two gold; Bev Robinson won one gold and one bronze; and Anne Nunes took home one silver and one bronze.

Arizona Gives Day may coincide with April Fool’s Day this year, but the need to support Arizona nonprofits is no joke.
That’s why this year’s Arizona Gives Day, powered by AZ Impact for Good, will include the launch of a new platform to make donations easier for Arizona residents and the nonprofits they support. The new platform — AZGives.org — is designed to boost donor engagement, streamline processes and make giving even more impactful.
The annual day of giving has generated more than $47 million for Arizona nonprofits over the past decade and raised more than $5.3 million in 2024.
Nonprofit registration runs through March 7 for this year’s campaign, which enters participating nonprofits into a prize pool for more than 120 prizes totaling more than $150,000.
And Arizona Gives Day is more than just one day — donors can start showing their support for Arizona nonprofits right away or when the event’s early giving window opens March 11.
Contributions on AZGives.org are tax-deductible and, in some cases, can count toward the Arizona Qualified Charitable, Qualified Foster Care or Public School Tax Credits.
With an uncertain political and economic environment for the coming year, Arizona residents have an opportunity to take it upon themselves to make their communities a better place by supporting the work of nonprofits in a variety of different areas of specialty.
The Arizona Gives program is run by AZ Impact for Good, formerly the Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits + Arizona Grantmakers Forum. The event was started in 2013 to connect people with causes they believe in and build a lasting, stronger spirit of philanthropy in Arizona.
“Nonprofit organizations are so vital to the well-being of our communities, but many are facing uncertainty about how their programs will continue right now from decreased contributions,” said Jennifer Purcell, chief impact officer for AZ Impact for Good. “Arizona Gives Day is an opportunity for nonprofits to showcase the impact they are having on Arizona communities and for those people to give back.”
