CHINO HILLS, CA – The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir here, the largest Hindu temple in California, was vandalized on March 8, with security footage capturing the moment two individuals defaced the temple’s welcome sign and sidewalk with spray paint. One of the messages scrawled on the ground read “F— Modi.”
Temple members discovered the graffiti the following morning and reported it to authorities. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, which is investigating the incident, estimates the damages at $15,000. As of now, no arrests have been made.
The temple later shared surveillance footage, showing two vandals clad in dark clothing defacing the property. Community members and Hindu organizations have condemned the act, calling it a troubling escalation of anti-Hindu sentiment in the United States.

Responding o media queries, through the MEA website, spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, "We have seen reports regarding the vandalism at a Hindu temple in Chino Hills, California. We condemn such despicable acts in the strongest terms. We call upon the local law enforcement authorities to take stringent action against those responsible for these acts, and also ensure adequate security to places of worship."
Earlier today, BAPS's public affairs shared information about the incident on X, affirming that they would resist any attempts to sow discord. "In the face of another Mandir desecration, this time in Chino Hills, CA, the Hindu community stand steadfast against hate. Together with the community in Chino Hills and Southern California, we will never let hate take root. Our common humanity and faith will ensure that peace and compassion prevail," said the BAPS Public Affairs on social media.
Subsequently, the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) highlighted past incidents and said, "Another Hindu Temple vandalized - this time the iconic BAPS temple in Chino Hills, CA. It's just another day in a world where media and academics will insist there is no anti-Hindu hate and that #Hinduphobia is just a construct of our imagination. Not surprising this happens as the day for a so called 'Khalistan referendum' in LA draws close." CoHNA functions as a community-based advocacy group dedicated to promoting awareness about Hinduism and tackling challenges faced by the Hindu community across North America. Prior vandalism incidents targeting temples were reported last year, including an attack on the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Sacramento, California, on September 25, shortly after a similar incident at the BAPS Mandir in New York.

The largest Hindu temple in California, the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Chino Hills, was vandalised on Saturday, with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) strongly condemning the incident.

Images posted on social media showed graffiti with profanities targetting PM Modi.
As news of the vandalism came to light, the MEA issued a statement condemning the vandalism, while advocacy group Hindu American Foundation tagged authorities and called on the FBI to "to investigate this latest in a string of anti-Hindu hate crimes on our sacred spaces."
BAPS, meanwhile, took to social media to post a message calling for Hindu unity.

BAPS or Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha, founded in 1905, has over 1,300 Hindu temples worldwide. Of these, about a few dozen are shikharbaddha mandirs (large traditional stone temples), which are located in major cities around the world, including London, Chicago, Toronto, and Nairobi.
The one in Chino Hills near Los Angeles, which faced vandalism on Saturday, was one of these shikharbaddha mandirs. It had been inaugurated in 2012.
'Khalistan referendum' links alleged
The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA), another advocacy group dedicated to improving the understanding of Hinduism in North America, drew attention to past such cases and demanded a thorough investigation.
"Another Hindu Temple vandalised - this time the iconic BAPS temple in Chino Hills, CA. It’s just another day in a world where media and academics will insist there is no anti-Hindu hate and that #Hinduphobia is just a construct of our imagination," it said on X.

CoHNA gave a list of 10 temples that have been vandalised or burglarised in the last few years.
In September, the BAPS Hindu temple in California's Sacramento was desecrated with expletive-laden graffiti, saying "Hindus go back!"
Nearly 10 days before the Sacramento incident, another BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Melville, New York, was defaced with hateful messages.
The Consulate General of India in New York had strongly condemned the incident.
