The musical endeavors of Dieter Hennings Yeomans span from new music on guitar to early music for lute, baroque guitar, and theorbo and can be heard on the Naxos, Nonesuch, Bridge, Parma, NewBranch, New Albany, and Innova recording labels.
Mr. Hennings has been a soloist with Canada’s New Music Concerts Ensemble, Riverside Symphony (NYC), Tito Sccipa Orchestra (Lecce, Italy), Orquestra Sinfónica do Rio Grande do Norte (Brazil), Eastman BroadBand Ensemble, Eastman School Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfónica de la Universidad de Guanajuato, Orquesta Filarmónica de Sonora, the University of Arizona Philharmonia, the Orquesta Filarmonica de Monterrey among many others. Mr. Hennings has won first prize in several prestigious competitions including the 2008 Aaron Brock International Guitar Competition (Toronto), 2005 Eastman Guitar Concerto Competition, the 2002 Villa de Petrer, Alicante (Spain) International Young Artists Competition, the 2001 Portland International Guitar Competition, among others.
Mr. Hennings is an active proponent of new music, particularly that of Latin America, having recently worked with composers Mario Davidovsky, Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez, Juan Trigos and Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon. Mr. Hennings has recently premiered works by composers Jake Bancks, Wes Matthews, John Aylward, Beth Wiemann, Hebert Vazquez, Luca Cori, Juan Trigos and Scott Worthington and many more. Hennings has received grants from the Howard Hanson Institute for American Music, the Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (México) and the Fondo Estatal para la Cultura y las Artes (Sonora, México) to commission and premiere contemporary works for guitar.
Recent engagements include concerts with pop-singer Natalie Merchant and baroque violinist Monica Huggett as well as appearances at the Mexican Embassy in Rome, Festival SpazioMusica of Cagliari, Conservatorio de las Rosas in Morelia, Mexico, University of Chicago, Festival Internacional de Chihuahua, New York’s Joyce Theater, Julliard’s Paul Hall, and New England Conservatory. Mr. Hennings is a resident artist at the East Coast Composers Ensemble and the Eastman Broad Band Ensemble, with whom he maintains an active performing schedule.
Dieter Hennings is Professor of Music at the University of Kentucky and curates the UK International Guitar Series, which has brought to Lexington some of the finest guitarists in the world. A number of hotels and resorts have appointed general managers and managing directors in recent weeks. Here are some names to know.
In Florida, the Andaz Miami Beach appointed Fernando Rivera as general manager, overseeing the redesign and full transformation of the former Confidante Miami Beach, owned by Sunstone Hotel Investors. The hotel is slated to open in late December.
Rivera has spent years in Miami’s hospitality scene as hotel manager at Kimpton EPIC Hotel, pre-opening general manager at Kimpton Palomar South Beach, and general manager at Kimpton Angler's South Beach. Rivera's experience within Hyatt includes leadership commercial services roles at Hyatt Regency Miami and Grand Hyatt New York.
KSL Resorts appointed Luis Mendoza as the new general manager of Avila Lighthouse Suites in Avila Beach, Calif., part of the group’s Central Coast Collection of hotels.
Mendoza most recently was assistant resort general manager at Vespera Resort, an Autograph Collection property in Pismo Beach, Calif. Before that, he was general manager at the Hotel Indigo in Santa Barbara, Calif. In previous roles with Pacifica Hotel Company, Mendoza managed operations for multiple boutique hotels, including The Wayfarer Hotel in Santa Barbara and Fireside Inn in Cambria.
Mendoza holds an associates degree in sociology from Santa Barbara City College. He has also earned certifications in hotel management, including certified general manager from the Intercontinental Hotel Group and the 3-D Hotel Sales Program through Pacifica Hotel Group.
Millennium Hotels and Resorts appointed Matthias Kaiser the new general manager of The Biltmore Los Angeles.
Kaiser joins the Biltmore from his recent position as hotel manager at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown. He has held roles at the InterContinental New York Barclay; Hilton Beachfront Resort in Santa Barbara, Calif.; Swisstouches Hotels & Resorts in China; and Rosewood Hotels & Resorts in Saudi Arabia.
Kaiser holds an MBA from the HTMi Hotel and Tourism Management Institute in Switzerland, along with a Rooms Division Executive Certificate from the AHLA Educational Institute.
McKibbon Hospitality appointed Jason Caughron dual general manager of Courtyard Atlanta Midtown and Element Atlanta Midtown. Caughron will oversee both properties and their 282 guestrooms, along with the onsite restaurant, The Ponce Room Bar & Kitchen.
Caughron joins McKibbon from MMI Hospitality Group where he most recently was general manager of Fontana Village Resort & Marina. His previous work experience includes on-property leadership roles with Aimbridge Hospitality and Hotel Equities where he led hotel properties throughout the southeastern United States under various brand flags including Hilton Garden Inn, Courtyard by Marriott, Four Points, Hampton Inn & Suites and Westin.
Simon A. Fricker is the new GM at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows in Santa Monica, Calif.
Fricker previously was restaurant manager at Boston’s Westin Copley Place and then advanced to leadership roles at the Baur au Lac Hotel in Zurich, the St. Regis and New York City’s Peninsula Hotel. He helped launch the Le Méridien Hotel Chicago-Oakbrook Center and Mandarin Oriental Hotel Las Vegas. He was managing director of Aurora Anguilla Resort & Golf Club and helped oversee the resort’s rebranding.
The Gansevoort Meatpacking in New York City appointed Sherrin Thomas general manager.
Thomas has held leadership roles at The James New York - NoMad, Lyle Washington, D.C., and Riggs Washington, D.C. In her most recent role as opening director of sales and marketing at The Wall Street Hotel, she directed all sales, events, marketing and brand development and initiatives.
The Islands of Islamorada appointed Claudine Williams general manager.
Williams’ career spans several notable properties, including her most recent role as general manager at Ki’ama Bahamas, a part of Elite Alliance Hospitality. As part of the start-up team, Williams oversaw the design of club services, established operational standards and directed an exclusive pre-opening yacht charter program.
In the Florida Keys, Williams previously led the conversion of Marathon’s Marlin Bay Resort & Marina from a private residential community to a vacation rental resort.
Chris Suarez is the new general manager at the Nobu Hotel Palo Alto in California. Suarez previously was director of sales and marketing at the property.
Before joining the Nobu team in 2019, Suarez worked at several notable properties throughout California and Arizona, including Stanford Park Hotel, Four Seasons Hotel Silicon Valley, La Costa Resort & Spa, Four Seasons Resort Aviara, Estancia La Jolla and the Arizona Biltmore.
In California’s Carmel Valley, The Quail resort appointed James Overbaugh managing director.
Overbaugh’s journey with the Peninsula brand began in 2008. He was executive chef at an esteemed collection of hotels for the first 13 years of his career, Overbaugh joined The Peninsula team in 2008 as the executive chef of The Peninsula Beverly Hills. Over the next nine years, he ascended to the role of executive assistant manager of food and beverage operations.
After his tenure at The Peninsula Beverly Hills, Overbaugh was promoted to a global leadership role, most recently as senior vice president of food and beverage operations for The Peninsula Hotels Worldwide at the brand’s head office in Hong Kong.
The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay in San Francisco appointed Sandeep Kumar hotel manager.
Before joining The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay, Kumar held leadership positions at several luxury hotels, including the JW Marriott Grosvenor House in London and The Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Hong Kong.
The Sebastian-Vail, A Timbers Resort in Colorado, appointed Kate Grattan general manager.
Grattan’s career in the hospitality industry spans over 25 years. She has held various general manager positions both at The Lodge at Vail and Austria Haus Hotel and oversaw the opening of several new Vail Resorts development projects in Breckenridge, including the townhomes at Mountain Thunder Lodge, Crystal Peak Lodge and One Ski Hill Place. Most recently, Grattan was managing director of Colorado for CoralTree Hospitality overseeing both the Vail and Snowmass markets.

OCTOBER 24, 2024 UPDATE
In response to community questions about the hazardous material incident that occurred on Thursday, October 17, additional items on this matter are noted below. As a reminder, this continues to be an active investigation.
TIMELINE/RESPONSE
The hazardous materials incident was initially reported via 9-1-1 call on Thursday, October 17 around 5:00 p.m. PAFD responded to 1501 Page Mill Road noting a green liquid substance flowing into the street; initial field testing determined the substance was not a risk to life and health. Protocols for a hazardous material incident were followed including reporting details to the California Office of Emergency Services (includes notification to Valley Water, California Fish and Wildlife, etc.). Valley Water confirmed notification and has been in communication with PAFD Haz Mat Investigator. An initial estimate of 500 gallons of water and the spilled substance was reported. Containment, remediation, and clean up concluded at 1501 Page Mill Road on Friday.
Continuous PAFD visual inspection of the creek at various storm drain/creek locations to monitor the situation and residual impacts were conducted and secondary locations were identified around the concrete lined channel of Matadero Creek near Boulware Park to the industrial area near Park Boulevard. Clean-up was initiated on Friday, October 18 and originally estimated to be complete by Monday, October 21.
Early on Tuesday, October 22, increased clean-up efforts were required in the North Ventura neighborhood. This was due to an unrelated natural watershed flow upstream that increased creek flow. Resident notifications were provided on Wednesday, October 23 at approximately 5 p.m. Clean-up near this location continues.
What was spilled and where?
The hazardous materials response occurred at 1501 Page Mill Road.
Tesla reported 12 gallons of the substance released into the storm drain. The substance continued through the concrete lined Matadero Creek channel to the area near Boulware Park, and was confined to a lower channel with no contact with the natural areas of the creek. The quantity of release remains under investigation. Tesla indicated the substance is sodium hydroxide, a common additive to water in cooling systems. Staff sent samples for testing and results typically take one to two weeks. Initial testing results have been received today and are under staff review. Preliminary review substantiates initial field determination that the substance is not a risk to life and health. Secondary testing is planned after clean-up is complete to validate clean-up effort.
What are the City’s next steps?
In addition to cleanup, an investigation of the cause is under way. Storage of sodium hydroxide requires a City permit, which Tesla had not obtained. Staff will complete its investigation upon completion of this incident and appropriate regulatory actions will follow, including reimbursement for remediation and clean-up costs as well as potential fines.
When is clean-up expected to conclude?
At this time, clean-up of the secondary location in the concrete line channel near Park Boulevard is anticipated to conclude this weekend. Clean up from Lambert towards El Camino is complete though a pump is diverting watershed water towards Park Boulevard outside the clean-up area.
INITIAL OCTOBER 23 UPDATE:
Late last week, Palo Alto Fire Department responded to a hazardous materials incident at 1501 Page Mill Rd in Stanford Research Park, the former HP and current Tesla property. Initial hazardous material containment and clean-up is complete at the incident location, with testing of the substance underway. Importantly, it has been determined that the substance is not an immediate threat to life and health.
PAFD has identified areas east of the initial spill near Park Boulevard, Lambert Avenue and Ash Street, for remediation and additional clean-up, with anticipated work continuing into next week. While initial work was limited to industrial areas, PAFD was notified late Tuesday of work shifting closer to residential areas, with notifications occurring Wednesday. No 24-hour work will occur in residential areas, with authorized weekend work.
The investigation is ongoing and coordination with various agencies continues.
