Manitou Springs Elementary School was evacuated Thursday morning for the second time in three days after an incident related to a smell in the building, according to officials.
Three to four staff members were in the school's kitchen on the basement level around 9 a.m. when they smelled something similar to the odor observed when a substance was found in the school's auditorium Tuesday morning, according to the Manitou Springs Fire Department.
On Tuesday, third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students were in the auditorium, school officials said. A white powder was found and tested, they said. No test results have been announced.
No visible powder was reported Thursday, but parents were asked to pick up their students and classes were called off around 10 a.m. Classes were also called off for Friday, ahead of Manitou Springs' winter holiday break that runs until Jan. 8.
Kitchen staff on Thursday experienced similar symptoms such as coughing, itchy throat and watery eyes — much like those reported Tuesday — that went away when they went outside the building, the Fire Department said.
Health
El Paso County's hazardous-materials team joined the investigation Thursday, as it did earlier this week to collect samples and run tests.
According to an email from District 14 Superintendent Steve Dorsey sent to parents Thursday around noon, a vacuum used Tuesday in the auditorium and Thursday in the basement was taken by the El Paso County hazardous-materials team for further testing. The email also stated the auditorium was deep cleaned Wednesday by a third-party commercial cleaning company, but following Thursday's incident the entire school will now be deep cleaned.
One staff member Thursday was evaluated by first responders on site, but was cleared, according to district officials. No students were assessed, the release emailed shortly after 10 a.m. stated.
Parents were asked to pick up their children at the school, and the school will remain closed Friday, Dorsey said.
The school is located at 110 Pawnee Ave., about one block off Manitou Avenue, the town's main drag.
Joy Walz, a parent to a fifth-grade student at Manitou Elementary, was concerned by the sequence of events.
Walz said that she and other parents want the white powder identified. She said after parents picked their children up Tuesday they heard nothing for the most part from the district for hours, which was troubling.
Walz's daughter told her on Tuesday "the kids were hitting seats in the auditorium and that's when everyone started coughing." She said her daughter also told her the white powder smelled sour and she felt nauseous after her initial symptoms resolved. Her daughter told her it "freaked her out after seeing kids with watery eyes."
Walz said she did not send her daughter to school Wednesday after the incident Tuesday, but she said that Thursday her daughter — adamant about getting back to class — returned to Manitou Elementary. Walz said she was not comfortable having her daughter back at the school even after the upcoming winter break until the powder substance is identified.

To trim or not to trim (the tree)?
The answer, according to park managers, is “don’t” if you happen to be hiking on the Manitou Incline.
Parks officials sent out a statement last week asking hikers of the popular, vertically challenging trail to refrain from the yearly tradition of leaving ornaments, decorations and lights on a tree at the top.
“While we appreciate the creativity and spirit behind these decorations, we are committed to protecting the natural ecosystem. Outside decorations can harm wildlife and the environment by posing entanglement and ingestion hazards, introducing chemical pollution, contributing to litter, and distracting animals from their natural behaviors,” read the statement from Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services, which maintains the trail.
Posted online and on the tree in question, the notice has sparked debate on major social media groups dedicated to the Manitou Incline, which sees tens of thousands of hikers a year and a small number who may summit multiple times a day to attempt records or challenges.
The city removed the ornaments and says it is “in the process of returning all personal items to their respective owners.” One of those people is Raymond Bailey, a long-time Incline aficionado who has climbed the track of the old Pikes Peak Cog Rail to the top 13 times in the past 3 days for a fitness challenge. Always decked out in a Superman onesie, Bailey fittingly put a Superman ornament on the tree this year.
While he said he understood about enforcing leave-no-trace policies on a public trail, he said the years-long holiday tradition was a fixture for hikers who connected with the Incline. He said his daily or multi-daily summits have been an important part of his sobriety for the past five years.
“The tree supports and acknowledges people’s accomplishments,” he said.
Commenters on Manitou Incline Facebook groups have claimed that efforts would be better spent cleaning up worse-off trails in the city. According to Bailey, the tree is cleared shortly after the holidays every year. He has not yet been in touch with the city about the ornament he placed.
Others on social media have said that the measure is warranted to protect local wildlife. Some have suggested the use of biodegradable ornaments.
Regardless, the decision has not stopped some hikers. A few ornaments are back up on the tree as of Monday, along with an anonymous counter notice.
“The downtown center is decorated with ornaments and lights. This Incline Tree will also remain decorated this holiday season,” it reads.

Students at the Manitou Springs Elementary School were evacuated on Tuesday morning, after finding an unknown substance in the gymnasium. The Manitou Springs Fire Department was contacted after an "inhalation incident of an unknown cause," according to the City of Manitou Springs.
MANITOU SPRINGS — Students at the Manitou Springs Elementary School were evacuated on Tuesday morning after a powder was found in the auditorium.
The Manitou Springs Fire Department was contacted after an "inhalation incident of an unknown cause," according to the City of Manitou Springs.
The students were moved to Manitou Springs High School. As of now, there are no reports of injuries from students or faculty. The Manitou Springs Fire Department evaluated each of the students.
The following letter was sent to parents of the Manitou Springs School District:
"District-Wide Update: Hazmat Investigation and Plan for Tomorrow Dear Manitou Springs School District Families and Staff, I want to provide an update and a brief recap of today’s events at Manitou Springs Elementary School (MSES). Recap of Today: • This morning, a visible powder was discovered in the Manitou Springs Elementary School auditorium, where 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students were present. Some individuals experienced symptoms such as coughing and burning eyes. Manitou Springs Fire Department officials say symptoms resolved once students and staff were removed from the area. • MSES families, if you have any immediate health concerns, we encourage you to consult with your healthcare provider. • As a precaution, the school was evacuated, and students and staff were relocated to Manitou Springs High School, where our reunification plan was implemented. • The Manitou Springs Fire Department and El Paso County Hazmat team conducted a thorough investigation. Update on the Hazmat Investigation: The El Paso County Hazmat team’s testing determined that no hazardous substance was present. The auditorium has been cleared for cleaning, and a deep cleaning will be conducted as an added precaution. The auditorium will remain closed and unused until this process is complete. Plan for Tomorrow: Manitou Springs Elementary School will resume its normal class schedule tomorrow, Wednesday, December 18. Manitou Springs Fire Department and the El Paso County Hazmat team have deemed the building safe. Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we prioritized the safety and well-being of our students and staff."

Students News5 spoke with explained how a normal day of school turned into panic when they started smelling gas and began to cough.
“We didn’t really know what was happening; we just had to get out of the school,” said India Joseph, a fourth grade student at the school.
The students were moved to the high school, where parents were asked to pick up their children.
India’s mom, Rebecca Joseph, says how she found out about the incident.
“At first they just told me it was an irritant in the air and was making some kids cough… I didn’t realize it was mine,” she said.
For India, she just wants to be back in the classroom.
“I’m really hoping that I can go back to school and see what is happening because we had to leave all of our stuff.”
The Manitou Springs Fire Department evaluated each of the students before releasing them to their parents or guardians.
School will be back in session tomorrow, although the auditorium where the third, fourth, and fifth graders were present will be closed.

The Incline
So, late this summer I decided to do the walk! The far West side of town is all about adventure for those bold enough to tackle the Incline; one mile of steep steps, a perpendicular climb that hugs a portion of the 14,115-foot Pikes Peak.
The most popular hike near Colorado Springs, the Manitou Incline boasts more than 200 hikers a day, weather permitting. This steep mountain ascent was originally built as a cable car to carry materials to build pipelines on Pikes Peak.
Ziplining
Adventures Out West is also headquartered in Manitou Springs. Visitors can enjoy the natural terrain zip line, where five separate lines zip across canyons and through mountain foliage. There are also rugged terrain Jeep Tours, and Segway trips through Garden of the Gods.
Historic District
Traveling east into the heart of the shops and dining district the curious palate can find everything from casual bistros including Good Karma and Wine Bars such as D’Vine Wines where my husband and I sat down to taste several unique wines made on property. We also became novice vintners there, when we worked with the on-site winemaker to craft a case of hearty wine to give as Christmas gifts.
Continuing east the town boasts unique experiences for both the body and brain. Housed at the Manitou Art Center (MAC) is the Pikes Peak Makerspace.
My 34-year-old nephew is a member and spends time at the unique facility, which houses a 3-D printer and on-site engineer with three PhDs who are currently in the final stages of creating a prosthetic arm and hand for a young local teen who was born without them. Members share a wood shop, a metal shop, a laser cutter, and an electronics work area to convert ideas into physical reality.
Mineral Hot Springs
Perched above downtown Manitou is the SunWater Spa & Wellness Center, where locals have spent several hours soaking in the heated mineral springs water. These thermal springs have made the town a health seekers retreat for more than 150 years.

Manitou Springs School District 14 is accepting applications for a new steering committee that will oversee the development of a likely bond next year.
The development of the bond is still coming together as the district looks to address needs throughout the district identified in an Americans with Disabilities Act and Office of Civil Rights audit.
During the 2018-19 school year, Manitou Springs High School applied for federal funding through the Carl Perkins Vocational Act to expand its career and technical education programming. Because they are federal dollars, the school was randomly selected for an audit that year to assess spaces and access for students with disabilities.
In February 2020, a group from the Colorado Community College System conducted a physical audit of Manitou Springs High School and Manitou Springs Elementary School and found multiple structures and facilities that were out of compliance with ADA standards.
Buildings constructed before the 2010 ADA standards do not have to meet these requirements if they comply with the previous 1991 standards. However, any new buildings and required upgrades going forward must comply with the latest standards.
The school district originally hoped to address the deficiencies and other facility upgrades through a bond measure in 2021. If it passed, the $43 million bond would have built a new middle school and renovated the high school while also improving safety and security and upgrading its playgrounds and athletic fields.

The bond failed and the district’s bond committee and board of education began working on policy and procedure amendments and projects to bring the district up to ADA compliance.
Colorado Springs-area school districts say no to bonds
The audit reported that the schools lacked required signage and that various facilities such as restrooms, curb ramps and parking lots were not fully accessible to people with disabilities. Updated policies and procedures handbooks were completed for the start of the 2023-24 school year while corrective actions were made for exposed bathroom plumbing and bars, and bathroom dispensers were readjusted to ADA heights.
Representatives with RTA Architects presented D-14's board design concepts for the high school’s commons bathroom, additional ramps, accessible locker rooms, a limited-use elevator for people with wheelchairs and other renovations to meet the audit’s accessibility criteria during the Nov. 21 school board meeting.
Work remains ongoing for final project designs, preliminary pricing from contractors and developing a master plan and accompanying website for a bond. Superintendent Sean Dorsey told the board he’s “hopeful” that some of the ADA renovations could be completed through the current general fund after pricing out the project.
“I think that it shows not only good faith, but I think we can solve some potential issues…before going to a bond in 2025,” he said. “And that’s honestly the right thing to do for our patrons, internal and external stakeholders alike.”
In the meantime, the district is accepting applications for a new bond steering committee that will begin meeting in January.
Dorsey said that he’s received feedback from a variety of community members , but they still need more applicants. The tentative plan is for them to meet multiple times per month.
“And, really, their charge is going to be to come up with a couple of different options to bring to the board, as far as a potential bond…package for the board to consider and to move forward, potentially, in November 2025,” he said.
