The Unified Government of Wyandotte County and KCK Board of Commissioners approved a final legal step that will allow the future beaver-themed travel center to move forward.
Officials have been planning for years to bring the future Buc-ee’s, a 74,000-square-foot location that will be one of the largest in the country with 120 gas pumps and 12 electric vehicle charging stations. The store will be near the Kansas Speedway, just off Interstate 70.
The Texas-based chain, famous for its massive convenience store experience and beaver-branded items, has been expanding further north in recent years. The closest location to Kansas City is in Springfield, while two future stores have been announced in Wisconsin.
UG commissioners needed to approve a technical step to remove a sliver of land of the future Buc-ee’s site from the existing Kansas Speedway sales tax and revenue (STAR) bond district so Buc-ee’s could buy the land from Kansas Speedway.
The board had previously removed most of the land on the future Buc-ee’s site from the STAR bond district, but the small strip remained after the site’s design shifted slightly, according to information presented to the board last week.
The board’s vote fixed the issue and removed a hurdle to Buc-ee’s closing on the deal for the land.
Construction could take about two years. The travel center is expected to see about four million visitors a year.
The project comes with a proposed $13.3 million in tax incentives for road and utility upgrades, which will be funded by sales tax revenue from the Buc-ee’s site, according to county documents.

To help guide that decision, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services grades facilities using nursing home data including staffing levels, last two state health inspections and three years of complaints.
There are a total of 97 nursing facilities within 25 miles of downtown Kansas City, according to Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. But more than a third of those nursing homes received the lowest possible grade of one star from the federal department.
In Missouri and Kansas, annual inspections review residents’ well-being, the building, the staff and food safety.
Some of these facilities were recently cited for abuse. The Medicare website does not give details on what they were cited for or how many citations they received, but defines abuse as “willful infliction of injury, unreasonable confinement, intimidation, or punishment with resulting physical harm, pain or mental anguish. It includes verbal abuse, sexual abuse, physical abuse, and mental abuse.”

From backed-up sinks to chewed-up rice bags, health inspectors in Missouri and Kansas found numerous violations at Kansas City area restaurants in March.
Dining establishments like sit-down restaurants, drive-thrus, gas stations and cafeterias are required to get food inspections, and governments have to release those inspections to the public.
In Kansas City, the city’s health department enforces the food code while in Kansas, the state’s Department of Agriculture handles inspections. The lower the number of violations, the better.
Most restaurants often correct violations at the time of the original inspection or shortly thereafter. The full inspections show how each establishment has corrected or is working to correct any remaining violations. They are available for Kansas City at inspectionsonline.us/foodsafety/mousakansascity/search.htm and agriculture.ks.gov.
Here are the restaurants in Kansas City and Johnson and Wyandotte counties that received seven or more critical/priority violations from March 9 to 29.
The restaurant was shut down after failing to address issues after three follow-up inspections by the Kansas City Health Department. An inspector found the dishwashing sink backed up when the handwashing sink was in use, and grease buildup on the fryer.
An additional follow-up inspection has not occurred.
The fish restaurant was shut down after an inspector found the hot water temperature was 58 degrees, more than 25 degrees lower than it should be, according to the FDA food code.
The establishment fixed the issue and was able to reopen the next day after a follow-up inspection.
An employee picked up cupcakes with their bare hands and said there were no gloves at the Plaza bakery, according to an inspector. A can of WD-40 sat on a shelf with food above the industrial mixers and a mop was stored in a handwashing sink.
The establishment still had seven critical violations after its required follow-up inspection April 2.
An inspector found mouse droppings all throughout the kitchen, including on clean plates and bags of rice. Pests also chewed through a bag of rice, and tofu was kept under the dishwashing sink at room temperature.

There were no sanitizer buckets in the kitchen and a container of ground beef was defrosting incorrectly, according to the report.
