The Higginbotham Art Residences reflect URGE Development Group’s mission to incorporate art and celebrate local artists in every project. The property will feature an outdoor sculpture garden and showcase artwork throughout the development, produced by Detroit artists. Garlin Gilchrist II, Lieutenant Governor of Michigan, emphasized the impact of preserving such landmarks while advancing Detroit’s housing goals. “Governor Whitmer and I are committed to growing access to affordable housing in every community, including right here in Detroit,” said Gilchrist II. “I am excited to be here at the groundbreaking for the Higginbotham School, which will begin new life as 100 units of affordable housing 100 years after it was built. The state of Michigan was proud to provide critical support getting this project across the finish line. Since taking office, we have invested double what we did in the previous 8 years to build or rehabilitate 34,000 housing units, and we will keep standing tall for affordable housing across Michigan.”
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan highlighted the importance of affordable housing as a cornerstone of community development. “Today’s groundbreaking is about more than a building; it’s about creating a future that respects our past and supports our neighbors. The Higginbotham Art Residences will provide quality, affordable housing that meets the needs of Detroit’s residents and fosters community pride.”

The Higginbotham Art Residences will consist of 100 affordable units available to households earning between 30-80% of the Area Median Income, providing quality housing that Detroit residents can afford. The project will also create spaces for nonprofit and community organizations, fostering a hub for community engagement and support.
The project, led by URGE Development Group in partnership with Cinnaire, Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA), and the City of Detroit, is designed to serve as a model for preserving historic buildings while meeting Detroit’s housing and community needs.

Fewer than 1% of hospitals receive an “F” grade each season.

“Having an ”F" or “D” grade doesn’t mean all services are not good but it does mean they don’t have a great record for preventing patient safety events,” said Alexandra Campione, lead analyst for The Leapfrog Group.
“The public needs to put pressure on hospitals to do better.”
A spokesperson for Detroit Medical Center said it doesn’t participate in the annual Leapfrog hospital survey, yet “grades are still published even though there is incomplete or dated information.”
However, a number of concerns highlighted by the Leapfrog Group report come from data reported by hospitals to the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
Sinai-Grace Hospital was given a below-average score for a variety of safety problems including MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) infections, blood leakage, and collapsed lungs.
Detroit Receiving got below-average scores for surgical site infections after colon surgery, serious breathing problems, patient falls and injuries, falls causing broken hips, and dangerous blood clots.
Both DMC hospitals also got red flags for infections in the blood, sepsis infection after surgery, surgical wounds splitting open, dangerous bed sores, and death from serious treatable complications.
By declining to participate in the survey, DMC may have gotten lower grades than otherwise for things like having clear handwashing policies, nursing workforce, culture of leadership structures and systems, culture of measurement, feedback and intervention, and total nursing care hours per patient day."
Campione said hospitals don’t get a failing grade based on one bad measure. Rather, it’s a holistic grade for all measures related to patient safety.
“Patient safety is the most basic thing a hospital can provide to its patients,” she said. “We think it should be at the top of everyone’s priority list and it is possible to do well even with limited resources.”
Bret Jackson, president and CEO of the Economic Alliance for Michigan, said DMC is letting patients down after once being a leader in the field with one of the safest hospitals in the country.
“A culture of safety begins at the top, and I call on the leadership team at DMC to put patients at the top of their agenda,” Jackson said in a prepared statement.
Michigan had 22 hospitals earn an “A” grade. Of the remaining assessed hospitals, 29 earned a “B,” 26 got a “C,” two earned a “D” and two got an “F.”

Leapfrog ranks the states based on their ratio of “A” hospitals. This year Michigan ranks 29th with a rate of 27.2%, trailing far behind leaders Utah (60.7%), Virginia (57.7%), Connecticut (50%), North Carolina (46.7%) and New Jersey (46.3%).

Two Detroit hospitals, both part of the Detroit Medical Center, have received "F" grades on patient safety in a recent report.
Detroit Receiving Hospital and Sinai-Grace Hospital got those grades in the report by the Leapfrog Group, which describes itself as a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that serving as a patient watchdog.
The group says its grades reflect the ability of hospitals nationwide to keep patients safe and prevent them from contracting illnesses or conditions they did not have upon admission.
Bret Jackson, president and CEO of the Economic Alliance for Michigan, which collaborated with Leapfrog on the study, said the findings in the Detroit hospitals were concerning.
“There are some areas where they may even be the worst hospital in the country for a specific metric,” Jackson said.
The report rated the two DMC hospitals poorly in several critical areas, including surgical wounds that reopen, deaths from serious yet treatable complications, severe breathing problems, dangerous bedsores, patient falls and injuries, and harmful blood clots.
The Detroit Medical Center said the report's findings painted an incomplete picture.
"Detroit Medical Center does not submit data or participate in the annual Leapfrog Hospital Survey. Grades are still published even though there is incomplete or dated information," the medical center said in a statement to Michigan Public.
DMC did not respond to a followup question asking why it does not participate in the survey.
Jackson said DMC's participation in the Leapfrog survey is not essential to the grading, as most of the metrics the report used come from the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
Jackson said he believes that ensuring patient safety starts with senior management.
“Leadership has to engage every single person — not just doctors and nurses, but also those who clean the rooms and work security. Everyone in the hospital must be committed to making it the safest and least harmful place for patients,” he said.
Jackson said the hospitals can improve their scores. He said he's seen hospitals with D and F grades transform into A-grade facilities in a relatively short period and hopes for a similar turnaround at DMC.

MICHIGAN — Ten nursing homes in the Detroit area are among the nation’s best, according to a new ranking released Tuesday by U.S. News & World Report that sheds light on a nationwide nursing home staffing shortage.
The 2025 Best Nursing Homes report ranks facilities that offer short- or long-term care or assisted living services. Fewer than 20 percent of the nursing homes evaluated made the ranking, U.S. News said in a news release.
There are 152 nursing homes and skilled nursing facilities in the Detroit area. Of these, ten received an overall rating of 5 out of 5. They are:
U.S. News evaluated 152 nursing homes in metro Detroit and ranked 27 of them. Of those selected for the 2025 “best” list, seven were ranked for long-term care, 20 for short-term care and two for both.
In Michigan, 425 nursing homes were evaluated and 116 made the 2025 “best” list. Of those, 48 were ranked for long-term care, 69 for short-term care and 20 for both.

U.S. News said 1,637 U.S. cities (out of 5,147) and 715 U.S. counties (out of 1,687) have at least one nursing home on the list.
“These facilities set the standard for quality care and should be commended for their commitment to improving the lives of their residents,” Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News, said in a news release.
Overall, the evaluation found that more than half of U.S. nursing homes don’t comply with federal regulations requiring at least eight registered nurse staffing hours every day. Among those that did not comply, the average nursing home had 15 days of inadequate staffing, according to the report.
“Staffing levels continue to be a major challenge for U.S. nursing homes,” Harder said.
The short-term rehabilitation facilities that were ranked have an average of 50 percent more nursing care per resident than facilities ranked below average in short-term rehab. The top long-term facilities have double the staff retention rate of nursing homes when compared to underperforming nursing homes, Harder said.
Among other findings:
Metro areas with the most nursing homes on the “best” list (in alphabetical order) are Boston, Chicago, Miami-Fort Lauderdale, Minneapolis-St. Paul, New York City, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego, San Francisco-Oakland and Washington, D.C.
To calculate the Best Nursing Homes ratings, U.S. News evaluated each nursing home’s performance using a variety of quality measures obtained from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Service. Among factors considered are resident care, safety, outcomes and other aspects of quality — including data on nurse staffing levels, consistency and retention, as well as use of antipsychotic drugs and success in preventing ER visits.
