For more than 30 years, this Garden City restaurant has been dishing out Mandarin and Sichuan cuisine. House specialties include the Chinese-Korean dish ja-jang mein (jjajangmyeon), noodles stir-fried with chopped onion and shrimp, topped with a Chinese black bean sauce.
Empire Dynasty is essentially two restaurants in one: for those craving comforting, takeout classics, the Chinese American menu features hits like crab rangoon, egg drop soup, and general Tso’s chicken. The traditional menu includes a wide breadth of dishes like fried whole fish, fried ribs with cumin, spicy boiled crayfish, and plenty of vermicelli noodles.

A Taiwanese bakery run by chef Douglas Chou, Moose Tea & Pastry is a jewel in Novi. The pastries oscillate between savory and sweet — including the yakisoba dog (stir-fried noodles in a hot dog bun), deep fried hot dog, pork floss bun, and a selection of sweet buns like the red wine raisin. There’s even a delicious tiramisu. In addition to tea, Moose also serves coffee and customers can order whole cakes, too.
Jeff’s Kitchen serves some of the best soup dumplings around, along with other Shanghai-style dishes like blue crab and sizzling beef with vegetables. They also have a dim sum menu with juicy pork buns, crispy spring rolls, and red bean pancakes. Jeff’s Kitchen is booked by reservation only.

Campbell Flynn wasn't sure what to expect when she walked into the Farmington Hills Mercy auditorium on Friday morning, and was blown away by a raucous welcome from her closest family, friends, and coaches.
In fact, she was so shocked, she didn't even see the 3-foot trophy with her name on it in the corner until later.
The senior setter for Farmington Hills Mercy was the last to learn she won the 2024 Michigan Miss Volleyball Award.
Campbell walked in with athletic director Brandon Malinowski to the surprise award ceremony in the middle of the school day with a big smile as she saw her friends and family cheering and turned to hug her head coach, Loretta Vogel, who helped organize the surprise.
"It's crazy," Flynn told the Free Press about winning the award. "It's a crazy moment. I'm just so blessed and honored to get this amazing award because so many amazing athletes have had it before me."
After the surprise wore off, Vogel and Flynn walked to the front of the auditorium, where Flynn noticed the big trophy sitting in the corner, signifying she was winning the award for the top senior volleyball player in Michigan.
"I saw a bunch of people in the stands and everyone just started screaming," Flynn said. "I didn't even see the trophy until I walked in."
Miss Volleyball chairperson Bre Johnson of the Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association (MIVCA) presented the award to Flynn, who received 362 points in the MIVCA voting by coaches after 10 finalists were named. Shelby's Navea Gauthier finished second with 258 points, Cass City's Shelby Ignash finished third with 135 points, Bedford's Victoria Gray was fourth with 95 points and Bloomfield Hills Marian's Isabelle Busignani was fifth with 92 points.
Flynn adds Miss Volleyball to an impressive list of awards from her four-year high school career. She was named the Gatorade Michigan Volleyball Player of the Year after leading Mercy to the Division 1 state championship in 2023 as a junior, and is a two-time Division 1 all-state first-team member. She will likely finish her high school career with a third.
"She's been playing volleyball since she was tiny," Shayne Flynn, Campbell's mother, told the Free Press. "And to see her persevere and to continue to get better and better and just love the sport the way she does and the way she plays is so inspiring. It makes me so happy that she earned that."
During her high school career, Flynn also played for the U19 and U21 USA volleyball teams in international competitions and was a part of the Legacy Volleyball club teams to play against top competition. Teammates and coaches from each stop in her career were present for the awards ceremony and lined up to get their pictures taken with the new Miss Volleyball.
Her biggest accomplishment in high school was leading Mercy to the state championship in 2023 over Marian, along with being able to play on a team with as much talent to win a state championship.
"She came back from the national team a little beat up," Vogel said of Flynn's junior season. "So for us, we were able to give her some time off but it was clear that once Campbell was with us — her obvious skill is being able to set and distribute the ball — it just had a night-and-day impact on our team. Giving them those balls and the decision-making just changed our whole season."
Flynn followed up the state championship with an impressive senior season, where she tallied 295 assists in 2024 to lead the Detroit Catholic League. She also recorded 20 aces, four blocks and 81 digs. Mercy could not repeat as state champions after being knocked out by top-ranked Northville, who is still playing, at the start of the playoffs. It was Mercy's only loss to a Michigan-based team.
"I loved everyone on my team," Flynn said. "I had amazing bonds with everyone. Yeah, it wasn't what we wanted (in 2024), but we still had an amazing season that I'll cherish forever."
Flynn's standout career in high school, club and the national team made her one of the highest-ranked volleyball recruits in the 2025 class. Flynn, the No. 4 overall recruit and the top-ranked setter according to Prepdig's recruiting rankings, is committed to volleyball powerhouse Nebraska. She will enroll early in January as a part of a top-ranked recruiting class for the Cornhuskers, currently ranked No. 2 in the country. They have made it to the national championship in two of the past three years.
"I still can't believe it's real," Flynn said. "I don't really think of my accolades that much. I try to stay humble but, again, I'm very blessed."

Farmington Hills Mayor Rich Hosting “Walk the Hawk” Events to Talk with Residents
FARMINGTON HILLS, MI— City of Farmington Hills Mayor Theresa Rich is excited to announce a new event aimed at fostering meaningful civic engagement within the Farmington Hills community. Residents are invited to participate in “Walk The Hawk with the Mayor” starting in September. This new opportunity is designed to facilitate direct interaction and dialogue with Mayor Rich.
“Walking side by side at The Hawk with members of our community is a great opportunity for collaboration, sharing ideas and concerns, and working together to make Farmington Hills an even more vibrant community,” said Mayor Theresa Rich. “I look forward to making meaningful connections and having important conversations about the issues that matter most to community members.”
Walks with the mayor will be held at The Hawk, the City’s award-winning recreation and performance venue, located at 29995 W. Twelve Mile Rd. The walks are free and open to the public. No registration is required.
The first walk will be held at 12 p.m. on Sept. 17, with other walks once per month on a Tuesday at noon. Walks are currently planned on Oct. 15 and Nov. 12. Community members should plan to meet the mayor outside on The Hawk track, or on the third floor of The Hawk during inclement weather. The scheduled walks will allow residents to exercise while engaging in conversations with Mayor Rich in an informal setting.
Mayor Rich is committed to creating avenues for residents to actively participate in shaping the future of Farmington Hills. This initiative underscores the importance of community involvement and collaboration in driving positive change. Residents do not need to be passholders at The Hawk to access the public spaces where the walks will be held.

The Michigan Attorney General office is looking into a complaint that an Oakland County suburb is misusing money intended for drug prevention and treatment.
Farmington Hills used $120,000 from its share of the national opioid settlement to backfill its budget for past costs associated with addiction.
That’s something not being done in 118 other Michigan counties, cities and townships for which Bridge Michigan was able recently to chronicle how opioid settlement dollars are being spent.

Michigan is expected to receive some $1.6 billion over 18 years from drug manufacturers, distributors and pharmacies deemed partially responsible for the opioid epidemic that kills about 3,000 people per year statewide.
The settlement agreement states that at least 70% of funds must be used “solely for future opioid remediation.” That same minimum breakdown of spending is echoed in the state's 2021 agreement with local governments.

Most other communities are using the money for treatment or other services to help recovering users, such as transportation.
Farmington Hills’ spending “is contrary to the intent of the funds and is in direct violation of the settlement agreements,” according to the complaint, which was filed by Jonathan Stoltman, executive director of the Grand Rapids-based Opioid Policy Institute advocacy group.
The complaint is the first filed with the attorney general over the lawsuit settlement. The office has the authority to investigate misuse of funds by local communities, which will eventually receive at least $745 million.
But how those dollars are spent is a mystery because the state does not track opioid settlement spending by local governments, and there is no formal mechanism for the office to learn a community is spending funds inappropriately.
If communities are out of compliance with the settlement, the Attorney General's office could sue or seek “an accounting remedy,” said Danny Wimmer, a spokesperson for Attorney General Dana Nessel.

This week, Farmington Hills City Manager Gary Mekjian declined comment to Bridge, citing the complaint.
Last month, he told Bridge that the city’s “funds received to-date helped to offset a portion of the prior costs incurred by the city related to the opioid crisis.”
Mekjian said Farmington Hills has $1.3 million in past expenses connected to opioids.
He declined to tell Bridge how the city came up with that figure, saying only that the costs “included personnel time, equipment, Narcan and other supplies.”
