Mountain Lion Spotted Again in North Texas, 3rd Sighting in Weeks

For the third time in just a few weeks, a wild mountain lion was seen wandering a neighborhood in North Texas. This time, Plano residents were graced by its presence as it spookily meandered by a Ring doorbell camera.
The sighting, according to Chron, happened just after two in the morning as this nocturnal cat walked in front of someone's house, presumably hunting for food.
Chron continued to note that the first recent sighting was in an RV park in Lake Dallas. Side note: Lake Dallas is NOT in fact a lake located in Dallas... pfft, I knew that... Anyways, the second sighting was just a few days later as one was seen outside of a house in Frisco.
Luckily, all sightings so far have occurred at night, and none of them resulted in any human interaction.
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Urban Wildlife Biologist Sam Kieschnick is under the assumption that these three sightings are simply of the same cat.
Fortunately, or unfortunately depending on how you view it, mountain lions (AKA pumas, panthers or cougars) are solitary animals that prefer seclusion and are active at nighttime, so they are often difficult to spot.
Kittens are raised primarily by their mothers who leave their young for hours at a time hunting for food. When the kittens are old enough, between one to two years old, they begin to hunt on their own and search for a new home to start their own litter.
TPWD encourages Texans who encounter mountain lions to stay calm, pick up small children or animals, DO NOT turn your back on the lion, lock eyes as you back away until you are out of eyesight.
You should not aggravate the lion, but if it becomes hostile towards you, find any rocks or sticks and start chucking them while speaking loudly and raising your arms to look bigger... no, seriously.
Lastly, TPWD warns Texans to fight back if a lion attacks you. Apparently, they can be driven off if you pose too much of a struggle to take down. Even children have driven off a mountain lion attack by retaliating.

Hall, a three-star prospect, was the star of Plano East’s 6A state championship team that went 40-0 last season. The 6-7 senior was the District 6-6A Co-MVP and averaged 15.7 points, 7 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 2 steals ahead of the state tournament. In Plano East’s 53-41 win over Round Rock Stony Point for the state title, Hall had 18 points and 6 boards, earning state tournament MVP honors.
At the time of Plano East’s championship win, Hall had just one college offer and it was from Texas State. Throughout the course of the summer, he picked up Division I offers from 12 other schools, including Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Louisiana Tech and Colorado State.

Plano East coach Matt Wester said Hall is Texas State’s most decorated and highly rated signee in program history. But Hall is also in the Plano East history books as the fourth player to score 1,000 career points. Wester presented Hall with a plaque to commemorate the accomplishment during Hall’s signing ceremony Wednesday.
Hall now leads a new-look Plano East team that’s hoping to continue making an impact after last year’s magical run.
“I just want to leave a legacy here. My name being remembered here like Jimmy King,” Hall said. “That’s all I’m trying to do here.”

The city of Plano shared this video clip of a mountain lion walking through an alleyway in a neighborhood near Big Lake Park on Friday night.
The Brief
PLANO, Texas - There’s been another mountain lion spotting in Collin County.
Plano officials said the animal was captured on a homeowner’s security camera on Friday night in a neighborhood near Spring Creek and Big Lake Park.
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department biologists confirmed the sighting.
Similar sightings were confirmed in Lake Dallas on Oct. 27 and in Frisco on Nov. 1. Both wer near Lake Lewisville.
It’s not clear if it was the same animal in all three locations or if there are multiple mountain lions in North Texas.
"All sightings have been recorded at night and no interactions with people or pets have been documented. It is likely that this mountain lion was just passing through and will not stay in the area for an extended period of time," Plano officials said in a news release.
Future sightings should be reported to TPWD DFW Urban Wildlife Biologist Rachel Richter at rachel.richter@tpwd.texas.gov.
Are mountain lion sightings in North Texas common?
According to wildlife officials, the recent mountain lion sightings in North Texas are incredibly rare.
There’s no established population of mountain lions in North Texas, but the animals can travel dozens of miles a day.
TPWD urban wildlife biologist Sam Kieschnick said mountain lions are usually only seen in southwest areas of the Lone Star State, like Big Bend.
"They are inordinately uncommon. But they have a home range of 100-200 miles, square miles. So, in other words, they can roam. They can move around," he said. "It may be looking for a suitable habitat. Probably not going to find the best habitat up here in Dallas- Fort Worth for it to stay. So, hopefully, it is simply moving through."
What to do if you encounter a mountain lion?
Kieschnick said there has never been a reported mountain lion attack on a human in Texas. But if you ever encounter one and cannot immediately get to safety, do not run or act intimidated.
"So, if you see a mountain lion, you want to look as big as possible," Kieschnick advised. "You want to shake your hands. You want to make noise, look like it would take a lot of energy to take you down."

Plano city officials on Tuesday shared a Facebook post with a screenshot of security video showing a mountain lion trotting down what looks to be a neighborhood alley. The time stamp in the screenshot showed the footage was taken shortly after 2:30 a.m. Friday.
The city’s post also included a link to a video of the security video.

Last week, state wildlife officials confirmed two separate sightings. A mountain lion was seen in late October at an RV Park in Lake Dallas and less than a week later in western Frisco — both near Lewisville Lake.
Sam Kieschnick, an urban wildlife biologist for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, said a single mountain lion is likely moving through the area.
“It’s hard to predict what nature wants to do. We’re kind of seeing through these three sightings that it is roaming. It is looking for room; it’s looking for an area,” Kieschnick said.
Given the rarity of mountain lion sightings in North Texas, Kieschnick and other state wildlife officials have said the cat is likely the same animal seen in Denton County.
“This is almost certainly the same cat. It’s impossible for us to say that it’s definitely the same cat, but it’s highly probable,” Kieschnick said.
Mountain lions are nocturnal, and attacks are rare, according to state wildlife officials. The department is monitoring the situation and asking people to report sightings.
“It’s an interesting time,” Kieschnick said. “In the past, you had to be a wildlife biologist with trail cameras set up to see wildlife, but now, with our security cameras, we can see wildlife all the time.”
If people encounter a mountain lion, they should pick up any children and small animals off the ground and not approach the animal, state wildlife officials advise.
They should try to remain calm, not turn their backs to the mountain lion and back away slowly if possible.
If a mountain lion is aggressive, people should not run. They should try to enlarge their body profile and throw objects, including stones and sticks, to scare the animal away. In the case of an attack, fight back.

Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) marked a key milestone on Oct. 24, 2024, with a groundbreaking ceremony for its new Silver Line Equipment Maintenance Facility.
The new facility is being constructed behind a 20,000-square-foot office building DART bought earlier this year at 3201 Technology Drive in Plano’s industrial area. This building will become the operations and maintenance center for Silver Line staff once the rail service begins.
“We are grateful to our partners at the city of Plano for sharing the vision of bringing this facility to Plano, allowing DART to continue investing our agency’s assets into our member cities and growing transit opportunities across the DART service area,” DART President and CEO Nadine Lee said in an official statement. “The Silver Line is a major piece to solving the mobility puzzle in North Texas by providing a strong east-to-west connection between Plano and DFW Airport.”
Located within DART’s 14-acre rail right-of-way, near the end of the Silver Line track and a few hundred feet from Shiloh Road Station, construction will have minimal impact on local traffic and surroundings. The facility will include two buildings for housing, cleaning and maintaining Silver Line vehicles, an underground fueling tank, a canopy for fueling and a storage yard for all vehicles.
By collaborating with Plano officials to establish a full maintenance facility, DART saved over $30 million in capital costs and nearly $1 million in yearly operating expenses compared to a proposed shared facility off the Silver Line route. Being close to an existing station also reduces empty trips to start daily operations and allows DART personnel to respond more quickly to any track or vehicle issues once the Silver Line is operational.
When completed, the Silver Line Equipment Maintenance Facility will be the fourth regional rail facility in North Texas and the only one in Collin County, joining facilities in Irving, Lewisville and Fort Worth. DART expects the 40,000-square-foot complex to accommodate 65 existing and new permanent employees, with additional space for future expansion.
Residents and commuters have become familiar with the Silver Line trains over recent months. DART has been running simulated test routes between Shiloh Road Station in Plano and the University of Texas at Dallas Station in Richardson since the summer. Testing along other parts of the 26-mile line, stretching from Plano to DFW Airport, will continue until the service launches in late 2025 or early 2026.
